DUMAGUETE CITY, April 21 (PIA) -- A top official of the Provincial Inter-Agency Task Force - Emerging Infectious Disease (PIATF-EID) cautioned Oriental Negrenses from taking Ivermectin as treatment for COVID-19.

Assistant Provincial Health Officer and PIATF-EID Ground Commander Dr. Liland Estacion said Ivermectin is intended only for animals and not for human consumption.

"Wala pa man na gi-approve sa Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Sa ako nahibal-an para ra na sa animals. Ivermictin is not for human consumption. Mismo ang FDA wa pod advisory ana (The FDA did not approve it yet. From what I know, Ivermectin is intended for animals and not for human consumption)," Estacion said during the PIATF-EID meeting yesterday at the Provincial Convention Center.

The health official shared that she has been explaining this whenever she receives inquiries about the effectiveness of Ivermectin against COVID-19.

The Department of Health (DOH) and the FDA issued a joint clarificatory statement which was shared at the DOH website on April 5, stating that "all current Ivermectin products registered in the country are for veterinary use and are only allowed for the treatment of internal and external parasites as well as prevention of heartworm disease in animals."

The statement also cited that "studies from the Philippine COVID-19 Living CPG Reviewers of a systematic review of six randomized controlled trials showed that: Ivermectin did not significantly reduce the risk of mortality among patients with mild to severe COVID-19 cases. Ivermectin was not associated with a definite benefit of other clinically important outcomes such as clinical improvement at Day 6-10, clinical deterioration, and need for mechanical ventilation."

DOH also does not recommend the use of Ivermectin as treatment for COVID-19 noting that World Health Organization Representative to the Philippines Dr. Rabindra Abeyasinghe already said there is no evidence that supports the use of Ivermectin as prevention or treatment of COVID-19.

In view of this, the Bureau of Customs in Dumaguete is now keeping an eye on the flow of Ivermectin in the Port of Dumaguete.

BOC Sub-port of Dumaguete Collector Fe Lluelyn Toring said they received a directive from their commission to monitor the importation and entry of Ivermectin for now.

"All district ports and sub-ports are required to submit a daily report with regards to Ivermectin," Toring said. (ral/PIA7-NegOr)
